So you know that strict return-to-office (RTO) mandates are really subtle layoffs right?

RTO mandates are emerging as a subtle strategy for workforce reduction that is legal. By enforcing in-office attendance, some companies anticipate voluntary resignations from those who prefer remote work, effectively achieving layoffs without formal declarations or severance payments. This underscores the importance of staying adaptable and prepared for career transitions.

Three Key Steps to Stay Ready in Your Career Amid RTO Mandates

  1. Stay Informed: Actually READ your  company's policies and announcements carefully.  Click the links and discuss with your manager.  Tie broader industry trends regarding work arrangements with what your company/industry may be doing.  Work at a tech firm? Best believe they are looking at Meta, Google, and Amazon for RTO policies and implementation strategies.  Understanding the landscape will help you anticipate changes and plan accordingly.

  1. Enhance Your Skills: Continuously develop skills that are in demand, especially those that support both in-office and remote work environments. This not only increases your value within your current organization (i.e. be able to solve a problem; not just lament about one) but also makes you a competitive candidate in the job market. Pro Tip: You can access LinkedIn Learning for free via your public library system.  Grab a library card asap!

  2. Expand Your Network: Maintain and grow your professional connections through platforms like LinkedIn but also, In Real Life. You have to stay connected with messages, coffee dates, check-in’s and chats. Why? Because relationships take time to build.  Keep your network warm. A robust network of folks that you actually talk to regularly can provide support, resources, and opportunities should you need to seek new employment due to shifts in work policies.

By proactively managing your career and remaining adaptable, you can navigate the challenges posed by RTO mandates and position yourself for continued success. Keep a good attitude. Do the work. And keep your resume up to date!
